What is Interior Design?
Interior design is the art of enhancing the interior of a space to achieve a more appealing environment. An interior designer is tasked with understanding the functional needs of the client and implementing them into their design, as well as understanding non-functional elements such as aesthetics, ergonomics, and even culture to create spaces that are both visually pleasing and psychologically comfortable. The end result should improve the quality of life for the inhabitants without sacrificing functionality or aesthetics. It’s not an easy job, but someone has to do it!
Decorating a room
There are several elements to decorating a room. The first step of designing and decorating a room is planning. This can be done by making a layout or draft (on paper) of how you want your room or area to look. Secondly, you must furnish your home with items that will make it more livable, pleasant, and comfortable (e.g. buying art pieces for your living room). When furnishing a space, ensure you buy quality furniture because furniture makes up about 70% of an interior design style. A house without proper furniture is not habitable. You should never compromise on quality when buying new furniture. Focus on getting high-quality leather sofas because they give off good vibes when one sits on them and last longer than most types of material used to make sofas such as fabric or vinyl.
Creating a space
Whether you’re looking to furnish your entire house or apartment or just add a few finishing touches, taking a look at some interior design books and magazines can give you great ideas for creating your own space. Some of my favorite websites for design inspiration are The Sartorialist, One Kings Lane, Apartment Therapy, and Houzz. Make sure to check out how others style their apartments on Pinterest and Instagram. If you have friends who are good with decorating and home organization, ask them about their favorite stores, designers, etc. And don’t forget about crowdsourcing—there are tons of interior design sites that let users upload pictures to get feedback from fellow designers and other users who share similar tastes.
Choosing the right furniture
If you’re planning to redecorate your home or office, you need to know how to choose furnishings. There are lots of factors to consider: durability, design, size, and price are just a few of them.
